PST Migration

PSTs can be located on USB drives, personal laptops, file shares, or anywhere an individual user puts them. At the very minimum, this practice will impact your organizational agility and burden your IT resources. However, the most concerning aspect of PSTs is the nightmare they create for eDiscovery efforts and the risk to intellectual property.

Eliminating the practice of creating PST files and migrating this data to the cloud will help mitigate the many vulnerabilities associated with this type of data.

    eDiscovery & Litigation Impacts

PST files hinder the capabilities of any legal discovery that is needed against this historical data.

    Complexity and Cost

Locating, accessing, and processing PST files can be time-consuming and expensive during eDiscovery processes. PST files are often stored locally on individual machines, making them harder to collect.

    Incomplete Data

PST files may contain outdated or incomplete information, leading to potential gaps in the data provided for legal or compliance purposes.

    Inaccessibility

PST files that are corrupted or password-protected can be difficult to access, further complicating the eDiscovery process.

    Protection of Intellectual Property

Intellectual property can be significantly compromised by data breaches to which PST files are extremely vulnerable.

    Security Risks

PST files stored on local machines or external drives are more vulnerable to theft, loss, or unauthorized access, posing a significant risk to sensitive and proprietary information.

    Compliance Issues

Organizations may struggle to comply with data protection regulations if they cannot adequately secure and manage PST files, leading to potential legal and financial repercussions.

    Organizational Agility

In today’s world, your team needs access to your organization’s data 24/7 and from an array of devices. Utilizing PST files can make this virtually impossible.

    Data Silos

PST files often create data silos, where information is stored locally rather than centrally, making it difficult to access and share information across the organization.

    Limited Accessibility

Employees may have limited access to critical information stored in PST files, hindering collaboration and decision-making processes.

    Migration Challenges

Migrating data from PST files to modern email systems or cloud-based solutions can be a complex and resource-intensive process.

    IT Burden

The burden on your IT team is multiplied with the use of PSTs adding complication to tasks.

    Storage Management

PST files can consume significant storage space on servers and individual workstations, leading to increased storage costs and management overhead.

    Backup and Recovery

Ensuring regular backups and recovering data from PST files can be challenging, especially if they are scattered across various locations and devices.

    Corruption and Data Loss

PST files are prone to corruption, which can result in data loss and/or additional help desk tickets to recover or repair the files.

    Other Concerns

The impact of PST files on an organization doesn’t stop with the topics above…

    • Performance issues: Large PST files can slow down email client performance, impacting user productivity.
    • Data redundancy: PST files often contain duplicate data, leading to inefficiencies in storage and data management.
    • End-of-Life Support: As email clients and systems evolve, PST files may become unsupported or incompatible with new technologies, complicating long-term data management strategies.
