For most of 2021, Microsoft has been trying to encourage people to switch from Basic Authentication in Exchange Online to Modern Auth. However, it’s an uphill battle as many enterprise organizations might have applications that simply ‘work’, and they don’t want to invest too much time in changing them to use Modern Auth.

However, the ‘encouragement’ is about to take a new angle. Starting at the beginning of 2022, Microsoft will randomly select Office 365 tenants and turn off Basic Authentication for 12-48 hours. During that time, of course, if you have applications that rely on that type of authentication, they’ll stop working. It’s without warning and will affect organizations of all sizes.

If you’ve not heard of this before now, and it comes as a surprise, it’s worth reading the entire post which Microsoft has provided.
